Despite efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, airstrikes between the two continue for the fifth day, killing at least 83 people in Gaza.
According to police, five Israelis were injured in a Palestinian rocket attack on a building near Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial capital. The Israeli military says seven people have been killed so far in Israel. The military said that air and ground forces were attacking the Hamas-run enclave.
Israel had earlier deployed more troops to the Gaza border following the escalation of the conflict. At the same time, the Israeli military is scrambling to contain riots between Jews and Arabs within Israel.
Lebanese military sources say three rockets have been fired at Israel from southern Lebanon. The Israeli military confirmed the attack and said the rockets landed in the sea. But it was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. According to Hezbollah sources, the Lebanese Shiite group had no involvement in the incident.
Internal unrest
The Gaza conflict is heating up, and Israel is witnessing unprecedented internal unrest. Arabs and Jews were beaten brutally, and police stations were attacked. Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gants has strongly called for “massive reinforcement” to suppress the internal unrest.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned of an increase in Arab-Jewish violence inside Israel. “We’re also deeply concerned about the violence in the streets of Israel,” he Blinken said. Mr. Blinken also said that the US is deeply concerned with the loss of life among civilians, especially children.
Despite global alarm and diplomatic efforts to contain the Gaza conflict, the US has yet to intervene. US President Joe Biden expressed hope that the conflict would end “sooner than later”.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced his “ironclad support for Israel’s legitimate right to defend itself”.
At the same time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the situation as “harrowing,” and said he would send a senior aide, Hady Amr, to intervene to help calm things down.
Israel targets Hamas
The Israeli air force launched a number of airstrikes targeting areas linked to Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel has attacked thousands of terrorist sites in Gaza. Netanyahu has said Israel will continue to attack military bases in Hamas and other Gaza groups. The United States and Israel consider Hamas a terrorist group.
Hamas armed wing spokesman Abu Ubaida urged Palestinians to rise up. “Mass up as you wish, from the sea, land and sky. We have prepared for your kinds of deaths that would make you curse yourselves,” he said.
Meanwhile, several people were reported dead overnight in Gaza after inhaling poisonous gas. Gaza health officials are investigating the deaths.
UN Security Council Sunday
On Sunday, the United Nations Security Council will hold a virtual public meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The meeting was originally requested by Tunisia, Norway and China.
