Noroviruses are spreading at a rapid pace… four times more sick than last year

Dublin: In the context of widespread Norovirus cases, HSE has four times the number of noro cases as it did at this time last year. The HSE urged people to be aware of the disease’s symptoms.

Officials explained that the norovirus causes vomiting and diarrhoea in the winter. In the first two months of this year, the HPSC confirmed 394 noro cases, compared to 109 cases at the same time last year.

According to the HSE, the disease primarily affects young children and the elderly. People over the age of 65 account for half of all cases. Children under the age of five account for 28% of all cases. In schools, nurseries, and workplaces, outbreaks are more likely. Dehydration is more common in children under the age of six months and the elderly, according to authorities.

In addition to vomiting and diarrhoea, norovirus symptoms include a low-grade fever, headache, painful abdominal pain, and leg pain, the HSE said.

The HSE has urged people to take precautions in order to prevent the virus from spreading. Wash your hands frequently and stay away from contaminated areas. The best way to avoid catching norovirus is to wash your hands with soap and water. However, the HSE also stated that alcohol hand gels do not work against the virus.
