Prominent environmental activist and leader of the Chipko movement Sunderlal Bahuguna (94), died of COVID-19 on Friday. The Padma Vibhushan awardee was being treated for coronavirus at AIIMS hospital in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand.
Bahuguna was admitted to the hospital on May 8 as his health became worse. According to reports, he had been experiencing COVID-like symptoms since early this month, but was taken to the hospital when his oxygen levels started to fluctuate.
The Chipko movement was a protest against deforestation by locals in the Himalayan region. The movement, led by Sunderlal Bahuguna, took place in April 1973 in Uttarakhand and spread several Himalayan districts over the next five years.
In recognition of his efforts, Bahuguna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2009. Bahuguna has also led protests across the country against a number of environmental issues, including deforestation and mining.
