Number of COVID-19 cases in Irish schools is rising significantly

DUBLIN: The number of COVID-19 cases in Irish schools is rising significantly amid fears that the country is nearing the fourth wave. In most schools, at least one case of COVID-19 infection is reported. The HSE conducted mass testing in 183 schools. The virus is expected to spread to schools in the wake of rising infections in the community.

According to the HSE, the number of childcare facilities where mass testing of COVID-19 was carried out has doubled from 35 to 71. A total of 4,062 students were tested in schools. The previous test was for 1,842 people. The details of the test are based on the seven days up to Saturday, March 20. The next level of testing is for those who are in close contact with the patients who have now been diagnosed.

Of the 183 people tested last week, 120 were primary schools. The tests were carried out in twice as many schools as last week. Of the 183 schools tested last week, 120 were primary, 52 were post-primary and 11 were special schools.

The positive rate in schools has risen marginally this week to 2.7%, but it remains below the community infection rate.

The fact that the rate of positivity in childcare settings remains so high that it is reassuring that young children adhere to the rules. Last week, 119 of the 1,236 people who were tested were found to be positive. Although much higher than schools and communities, it is down from 11.3% last week.
