Dublin: The INMO, the Irish nurses’ union, is preparing to strike again, demanding to solve the shortage of nurses in the health sector. Phil Ni Sheaghdha, general secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO), said the strike had been approved by the organization’s executive council.
The union found that hospital staffing shortages are causing a severe crisis and that unsafe staffing is common. The government pretends to be blind to the organization’s repeated requests. After a month of consultation, the organisation announced the procedure for the strike.
Polling will be done on a hospital/location basis in the first phase to gain members’ approval for the strike, with some locations facing massive reductions in staffing levels.
INMO asked the government to urgently prepare a plan to solve the problems in the nursing sector before the coming winter. INMO stated that it has requested that the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive develop guidelines for this before the INMO Annual Delegate Conference in May.
If the project is not completed by then, union leaders have stated that they will launch a national strike campaign.
