Dublin: Many private nursing homes in Ireland are under threat of closure, reports stated. Tadhg Daly, chief executive of Nursing Homes Ireland, has revealed that if the government does not provide additional funding, more nursing homes will have to close.
He called for residents in private nursing homes to receive the same funding as residents in the public system.
The government provides different levels of funding to private and public nursing homes. Residents in HSE homes receive an average of €744 per week in funding, while residents in private nursing homes receive much less.
He emphasised that all nursing homes must adhere to the same standards and that private homes must be adequately resourced.
He stated that the current system of remuneration determination under the Fair Deal scheme is unfit for purpose and that funds under the scheme should be increased to ensure sector stability and to ensure that currently low-paid private sector employees are on par with their public-sector counterparts.
Nursing Homes Ireland said it wanted to work with the government to resolve the issue.
Daly said that there is no immediate focus on the issue, and if the government does not act now, it will face more challenges.
