Balasore: It has been confirmed that 280 people have already died in the Odisha train accident in India. The accident involved three trains. The accident occurred when the Yeswanthpur-Howrah Express, which had derailed near Balasore, collided with the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express.
At the same time, three trains collided. Along with the passenger trains Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and Yeswanthpur-Howrah Express, a goods train also met with an accident. The goods train collided with the Coromandel Express, which was travelling from Kolkata to Chennai. Then 12 bogies of the Coromandel Express derailed, and the Yeswanthpur-Howrah train rammed into the bogies. Lightning caused the bogies to derail as well.
Over 900 people were injured. Rescue efforts are underway for those trapped in the derailed coaches. Railways has announced a high-level investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The families of the deceased will each receive Rs. 10 lakh in compensation. Those in critical condition will receive Rs 2 lakh each, while others will receive Rs 50,000 each. The incident occurred at 7:20 p.m. on Friday.
Due to the accident, 43 trains were cancelled across the country. There were 38 trains diverted. Two trains from Kerala have been cancelled. The cancelled trains from Kerala are the Thiruvananthapuram-Shalimar Dwaiwara Express and Kanyakumari Dibrugarh Vivek Express, which were supposed to depart today.
