Over 7,800 Hospital Patients Left Without Beds in August, Reports INMO

Dublin: Over 7,800 hospital patients lacked a bed in August, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO). University Hospital Limerick reported the highest number, with 1,215 patients without a bed, followed by Cork University Hospital (847) and University Hospital Galway (748). Other hospitals with significant figures included Sligo University Hospital (663) and St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin (536).

While overall overcrowding was lower than in August 2023, some hospitals experienced notable increases. For instance, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda saw patients on trolleys rise from 147 last August to 285 this year, while Beaumont Hospital in Dublin jumped from 20 to 257 patients.

The INMO has urged an immediate meeting of the HSE’s emergency department taskforce to address the situation and prepare for expected surges this winter.
