Dublin: Pakistani nationals accounted for the largest number of successful applicants at Ireland’s latest citizenship ceremony, surpassing Indian nationals in a notable change from recent ceremonies.
A total of 858 Pakistani nationals were reportedly granted Irish citizenship, compared with 716 Indian nationals. The figures have attracted attention because Indian nationals had topped the nationality breakdown at several previous ceremonies.
However, the results represent the composition of one particular ceremony and should not necessarily be interpreted as evidence of a long-term shift in citizenship trends.
Citizenship Figures Reflect Different Immigration Backgrounds
The nationality breakdown published for citizenship ceremonies does not identify applicants’ previous immigration status.
Those receiving Irish citizenship may include individuals who previously entered Ireland through employment permits, family reunification, relationships with Irish citizens, long-term residence or international protection.
Consequently, the figures cannot establish how many of those granted citizenship were refugees or arrived in Ireland through a particular migration programme.
Claims that groups of refugees were systematically prepared for citizenship would require independent evidence and confirmation. The available nationality figures alone cannot substantiate such allegations.
India Previously Led Citizenship Figures
Indian nationals had reportedly topped the nationality lists at recent citizenship ceremonies.
In September 2025, India accounted for 1,331 applicants, followed by Brazil with 608. Pakistan did not appear among the ten leading nationalities in that ceremony.
India also led the figures published in June 2026, with 1,116 applicants, while Pakistan was not listed among the top ten nationalities.
The latest figures therefore reflect a significant increase in the number of Pakistani nationals included in that particular ceremony, although further ceremonies would be required to determine whether the change represents a broader trend.
Applicants Advised to Prepare Documents Carefully
People eligible to apply for Irish citizenship are advised to begin preparing their documentation well in advance and to check that all information submitted is accurate and complete.
Errors, omissions or missing supporting documents can lead to delays in processing applications. Applicants should carefully review the official requirements and seek appropriate guidance if they are uncertain about any part of the process.
