DUBLIN: WhatsApp introduces a new feature that allows users to make voice and video calls through the desktop version of the app.
The company stated that one-to-one calls would be encrypted on the desktop, just as they are in the mobile app.
The Messaging Platform explained that the decision to add call functionality to the desktop was made in view of the significant rise in the number of calls made on the platform, as millions of people have been using online communications to stay in touch.
The latest update will enable users to make calls on their computer’s larger screen, and will also provide more options for how they can communicate with their close ones.
In a blog post about the update, WhatsApp said: “Answering on a bigger screen makes it easier to work with colleagues, see your family more clearly on a bigger canvas or free up your hands to move around a room while talking.”
In order to make desktop calling more effective, the company has ensured that it works seamlessly with portraits and landscape orientation. It appears on the user’s computer screen in a resizable standalone window and will always be on the top of the screen. So people would never lose their video chats in a browser tab or a stack of open windows.
WhatsApp set a new record by breaking its own record for voice and video calls, with 1.4 billion calls being made on New Year’s Eve.
Although group calls are initially not allowed, the Facebook-owned firm has confirmed that it plans to expand this in the future.
