DUBLIN: The Irish government is considering granting parents seven weeks of paid leave to care for their newborns. The current five-week paid leave is expected to increase from August next year.
Ireland’s changes are in line with new EU rules aimed at improving workers’ work-life balance. Parents of newborns can take paid leave for seven weeks from next August and nine weeks from August 2024. Currently, each parent receives up to five weeks of parental leave during the first two years of a child’s life. The government is committed to extending the rights until 2024, according to the European Union work life balance recommendation. Parents availing of the leave can also claim a benefit of €245 a week if they have made adequate social insurance (PRSI) contributions.
