Passport Office in Ireland may be recognized as an essential service

DUBLIN: There are signs that the Foreign Affairs Minister’s proposal to make the passport office an essential service could be enforced. Minister Simon Coveney will make a recommendation to the Cabinet today.

Currently, there is a backlog of 90,000 applications for Irish passports. Once the passport office is listed as an essential service, the government can complete the process in a month or two.

Currently, only one-third of Passport Office employees work online. The current move to declare the Passport Service as an essential service comes after so many backlogs came in despite 430,000 passport renewals being processed since Pandemic began.

Mr. Coveney told RTE’s Morning Ireland that once the passport office is fully operational, it will be able to process 120,000 passports per month.
