Dublin: On the 10th anniversary of the death of Indian dentist Savitha Halappanavar (31), there has been a call for further revisions to the abortion law.
Hundreds of people attended a protest rally in Dublin in support of this demand. Savita was killed because she refused to have an abortion, citing legal restrictions. Their sacrifice resulted in abortion legislation reform in Ireland.
The repeal of the Eighth Amendment was demanded by the majority of the country in the 2018 referendum. The constitutional prohibition on abortion was also repealed.
Abortion is legal in this country for up to 12 weeks. An abortion is performed when two doctors agree that the mother’s life and health are in danger or that the foetus is in danger.
