Polls Indicate Sunak’s Party Faces Major Defeat in UK General Election

London: With less than two weeks left for the general election, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party are facing the likelihood of defeat. Recent opinion polls indicate that the Tory Party, despite its strong stance on issues such as inflation, is not expected to secure a victory. If these trends continue, about half of the current cabinet members may lose their seats in the House of Commons.

Party Leaders in Betting Scandal

The Conservative election campaign head, Tony Lee, and his wife, Laura Saunders, a Tory candidate in Bristol, are under investigation by the UK Gambling Commission, adding further strain to the party’s challenges.

Polls Predict Significant Losses

According to a YouGov survey, the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, is projected to secure a substantial victory with 425 seats, while the Conservative Party is predicted to suffer a historic defeat, potentially winning only 108 seats. Another survey by Savanta predicts an even more dismal outcome for the Conservatives, suggesting they might secure just 53 seats, with the Liberal Democrats winning 50 seats. The survey also indicates that Sunak may lose his seat in Yorkshire, which is considered a stronghold.

Impact of the Reform Party

Analysts predict that the newly formed Reform Party will further split the Tory vote. The involvement of Conservative leaders in betting on the election date has caused significant embarrassment and has created a new crisis for Sunak and the party.

Campaign Failures

A report that UK inflation had returned to the 2% target for the first time in nearly three years in May undermined the Conservatives’ election campaign focused on reducing inflation. Additionally, the “Stop the Boats” campaign, aimed at implementing stricter immigration controls, faced a setback when 882 people crossed the English Channel in a single day. This led to widespread criticism of the Prime Minister’s handling of the situation.

As opinion polls continue to signal potential failure, the Conservative Party faces increasing scrutiny and criticism from both political opponents and the public.
