Dublin: President Michael D. Higgins has been admitted to St. James’s Hospital in Dublin after falling ill as he prepares to step down from office. Hospital authorities confirmed that the president is receiving antibiotic treatment and that his condition has significantly improved following medical care. They added that he is in good spirits and responding well to treatment.
President Higgins will continue to hold office until President-elect Catherine Connolly is formally sworn in on November 11. In a statement issued by Áras an Uachtaráin, Higgins extended his congratulations to Connolly on her election victory and assured that his office will provide full support during the transition period.
Earlier this week, the outgoing president hosted a farewell tea reception at Áras an Uachtaráin as part of his preparations to leave office.
President Higgins, who previously spent over a week in hospital in February last year after suffering a mild stroke, had taken a temporary break from public duties during his recovery and has since been using walking sticks for mobility.
