Dublin: Prime Minister Michael Martin has strongly criticised the public sentiment expressed at the recent anti-immigration rally in Dublin, emphasising that Ireland’s national policy remains inclusive and outward-looking. The Prime Minister made these remarks during the annual Easter Rising commemoration held at Arbour Hill Cemetery in Dublin on Sunday, April 19, 2025.
The large-scale protest over the weekend saw thousands gathering in Dublin city centre to oppose the government’s immigration policies. The event quickly evolved into a broader anti-government demonstration. In response, Prime Minister Martin condemned what he described as the “narrow nationalism” underlying the protest.
Addressing claims made by some anti-immigration groups that their protest echoed the spirit of the 1916 Easter Rising, the Prime Minister firmly rejected the comparison. “The vision of the Easter Rising was never narrow,” Martin stated. “It embodied a global outlook that was inclusive and progressive — values that continue to guide Fianna Fáil today. We stand against any ideology rooted in exclusion.”
Ireland’s Progress Recognised
The prime minister highlighted the significant transformations Ireland has undergone since joining the European Union in the early 1970s. He credited EU membership with strengthening Ireland’s economy and broadening opportunities for its people.
Martin warned that adopting restrictive and inward-looking policies would threaten the country’s progress. “Such narrow views are harmful to Ireland’s future. We must remain vigilant against them,” he said, referencing the resilience Ireland has shown through challenges such as COVID-19, Brexit, the war in Ukraine, and global inflation.
Protest Size Downplayed
In addressing the turnout at the protests, Martin emphasised that crowd size was not indicative of broader public opinion. “The results of local and parliamentary elections clearly show that the Irish people overwhelmingly reject these divisive ideas,” he noted.
Focus on Housing Solutions
Martin also acknowledged that housing remains one of Ireland’s most pressing social challenges. However, he stressed that the government is committed to practical solutions rather than empty rhetoric. “Social housing levels today are significantly higher than they were two or three decades ago, but we recognise the need to continue building. Our focus remains on delivering real, tangible results,” he said.
