Prime Minister Simon Harris Confirms General Election to be Held This Year

Dublin: Prime Minister Simon Harris has confirmed that a general election will take place in Ireland this year. While the government intends to complete its term, Harris indicated that a call for elections could be made sooner. However, before this happens, key legislative tasks need to be addressed, particularly the passage of the Finance Bill and the redefinition of housing targets.

Harris emphasised that the government must first clarify its housing objectives, outlining the number of homes to be built over the next five years. “We will ensure that these goals are met before moving forward,” he stated. He also confirmed that an election would indeed occur this year, although he stopped short of providing an exact date.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that dissolving the government is a constitutional privilege granted to the head of government but stressed that any decision on this matter would be handled with dignity and consideration for the country’s political landscape. “This right must not be used to distance any political allies,” he said, adding that the election will be announced in a cordial and cooperative manner.

Harris also expressed his desire to remain Prime Minister after securing a new mandate from voters. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin indicated that there will soon be greater clarity regarding the timing of the election. He confirmed that he will discuss the matter with Harris and Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman, noting that other political parties are also gearing up for the campaign season.

In an interesting development, it was reported that Roderic O’Gorman, leader of the Green Party, has suggested November 29 as the likely election date.
