Pro-democracy activists in Sudan report that around 40 people have been killed by paramilitary forces in Khartoum’s twin city, Omdurman, as conflict and displacement escalate nationwide. The Karari Resistance Committee attributed the attack to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), stating that over 50 people were injured. This follows a recent RSF assault on a village in central Gezira, resulting in at least 100 deaths.
The conflict, which began in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, has caused the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 15,500 fatalities, according to the UN. UNICEF’s Executive Director condemned the violence, highlighting the severe impact on children.
In North Darfur’s el-Fasher, RSF assaults have trapped over 800,000 civilians, with essential services collapsing and humanitarian aid blocked. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported nearly 10 million internally displaced people across Sudan.
The World Food Programme’s East Africa director described the situation as a “tragedy,” citing challenges in delivering aid due to ongoing displacement and insecurity. He emphasised the urgent need for global attention and support for Sudan amidst this crisis.
