Cork: Authorities have confirmed cases of avian influenza at the Lough wildlife sanctuary in Cork city, prompting warnings to the public not to touch sick or dead wild birds or feathers. Visitors are also advised not to bring sick birds home and to keep pets away from affected areas.
Cork City Council confirmed the outbreak following tests, with expert support from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the CSPCA. Monitoring and swift removal protocols are in place, but officials warned the virus can survive for weeks in the environment.
Avian influenza, a highly contagious viral disease among birds, rarely spreads to humans but can pose risks in limited circumstances.
The public is asked to report sick or dead birds to Cork City Council, local veterinary offices via the Avian Check Wild Bird App, or by calling the National Disease Emergency Hotline at 01 492 8026.
