PUP buyers should beware of fraudsters – Government warns

DUBLIN: The Irish government has warned buyers of Pandemic Unemployment Payments (PUPs) to beware of fraudsters.

The Department of Social Welfare has issued a warning following a spate of spam text messages from anonymous numbers asking people to click on the link below to receive the €350 PUP.

Fraudsters who send a message introducing themselves as from the Revenue Department ask you to click on the link below to get €350 as PUP. However, officials warn the public to keep their bank and other financial information safe and not to click on any such link. The department added that it would never ask for bank account information or other financial details through text messages or social media.

At the same time, Minister Heather Humphreys said people should be wary of fraudsters and make sure government official websites are used for services. The minister also said that if anyone unknowingly falls into the trap of fraudsters, they should contact their bank immediately.

Ireland recorded a 3% rise in the number of PUP recipients this week. PUP payments will be disbursed to bank accounts or their post office on Tuesday. The highest number of PUP receivers this week was from Dublin (147,191). Followed by Cork (48,731), Galway (25,130) and Kildare (21,063).
