TOKYO: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu made history by defeating China’s He Bingjiao at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday to win a bronze medal. Sindhu won the crucial encounter 21-13, 21-15, becoming the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. It was India’s second medal of the season, following Mirabai Chanu’s silver medal in weightlifting a few days earlier.
Sindhu had lost her semi-final on Saturday in a one-sided contest to Tai Tzu-Ying, who won 21-18, 21-12. However, Sindhu started strongly against Bingjiao to earn her country a medal and completely dominated the match, exactly as world number one Tzu-Ying did against her, winning straight games.
Sindhu had won silver in the women’s singles badminton at the Rio Olympics in her debut season. She is only the second Indian, after wrestler Sushil Kumar, to win two individual Olympic medals. The 26-year-old is also only the fourth women’s singles player in Olympic history to win back-to-back medals.
