Rare tornado hits Qatar, moves across desert

According to a tweet from the Qatar Meteorology Department, a rare tornado slammed northern Qatar on Wednesday.

The tornado struck between the completion of Round 16 matches and the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup, which is being held in Doha, Qatar’s capital on the country’s eastern coast. The quarterfinals are set to begin on Friday, with Croatia taking on Brazil and the Netherlands taking on Argentina. According to the BBC, over one million supporters have gone to Doha for the World Cup.

According to the 2016 World Risk Report, a global research project issued by the United Nations University, Qatar has the lowest risk factor for a natural disaster of any country. Tornadoes are uncommon in Qatar, despite the fact that natural catastrophes are not unheard of, and the Qatar Meteorology Department uploaded footage of one screaming through the desert on Wednesday.
