Recent data reveals that RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) cases in Ireland reached their highest recorded numbers last week, surpassing even the peak during last winter’s severe outbreak. The Health Surveillance Protection Centre (HPSC) reported 368 hospitalisations and 985 new cases, with the majority (786) occurring in children under 14. Dublin recorded the highest numbers at 232, while Cork and Limerick topped the counts in Munster counties.
Paediatric respiratory consultant Dr. Barry Linnane warns of a potential surge in RSV cases in the coming weeks, emphasising the virus’s contagious nature and the risk of severe respiratory issues, especially in infants. Dr. Kenneth Beatty, a specialist in public health medicine, expresses concern about the pressure on hospitals during the holiday season and urges parents to keep symptomatic children at home to limit the spread.
The medical experts advise vigilance for symptoms and recommend seeking medical advice if concerned, particularly for children exhibiting significant symptoms or a combination of symptoms. The emphasis is on minimising the spread of RSV to protect children and prevent strain on the healthcare system.
