Registration for COVID-19 vaccine for 12-15 year olds to begin next Thursday

DUBLIN: The HSE online portal for COVID-19 vaccine registration will open to those aged 12 to 15 from next Thursday. The Health Minister confirmed that the portal will be open to the group from August 12 and parents will be able to register their children for a vaccine.

Children in this age group will be offered an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna) based on the recommendation of the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC).

During clinical trials, the effectiveness of both vaccines was estimated to be 100% in these age groups, and the European Medicines Agency approved both vaccines as safe and effective.

In deciding on vaccination for this group, Stephen Donnelly advised parents and young people to seek information from trusted sources such as the HSE website.

Minister earlier mentioned that the vaccine rollout for children aged 12 to 15 is expected to involve a combination of vaccination centres and GPs.

Those aged 16 or over can avail of the walk-in service to get a vaccine dose. Walk-in vaccination clinics that provide Pfizer vaccine are available on weekends across the country. Anyone over the age of 16 can also register for a vaccine through the HSE online portal.
