From 1 January 2023, the minimum wage for people aged 20 and over will increase by 80c to €11.30.
In most cases, the amount of pay you receive for working is agreed upon between you and your employer. When you get a job offer, you usually have to negotiate your pay.
Most employees, however, are entitled to a minimum wage under the National Minimum Wage Act of 2000.
The national minimum wage is €10.50 per hour as of January 1, 2022. Some people, such as those under the age of 20, receive sub-minimum rates.
The national minimum wage does not preclude an employer from paying you more. Unless you are employed by a close family relative or are on a recognised apprenticeship, you cannot agree to be paid less than the minimum wage or to do unpaid work.
Upcoming changes in 2023
Minimum rates of pay will increase from 1 January 2023. The national minimum wage for people aged 20 and over will increase by 80c to €11.30.
