Repairs of Wexford General Hospital will begin today

Wexford: Renovations will begin today at the fire-ravaged Wexford General Hospital. According to the Ireland East Hospital Group, the areas affected by the fire have been cleaned and disinfected in preparation for renovations. The hospital is considering modular construction and other alternatives. The hospital’s operations are expected to resume next week.

The special-care infant ward was damaged in the meantime, but the maternity ward reopened on Friday. The OP section will begin today. Today, outpatient and radiology services will resume. Officials have clarified that patients can attend their scheduled outpatient appointments. Last week, OP, the hospital began contacting everyone who had lost access to their facilities. At the same time, the hospital’s emergency department is closed.

A few patients requiring further care were transferred back to the hospital from Waterford University Hospital. More patients will be transferred here only after power, medical gas, oxygen, and other technical services have been fully restored. Management anticipates that patients will be able to be transferred here by next week.

The hospital was the scene of the biggest fire and ‘evacuation’ of patients in Ireland’s history. The hospital building was also severely damaged as a result of the fire. All patients, including those in the intensive care unit, were transferred to other hospitals.

The 280-bed hospital caught fire around 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The quick rescue operation by 75 firefighters from the county and Waterford was widely praised. On Friday, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, Deputy Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, and Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien all paid a visit to the hospital. The government also promised to help with the hospital’s reconstruction.

According to Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ray Murphy, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The cause is thought to have been a mechanical failure in the plant room on the roof.
