Residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19; nursing home in Longford went into a complete lockdown

LONGFORD: A complete lockdown has been imposed at the Laurel Lodge Nursing Home in Longford after a number of residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19. The virus has infected people who have been vaccinated, adding to the complexity of the situation.

The virus infected 15 people at the nursing home, including inmates and staff members. Visitors are therefore not permitted, a spokesman for the institution confirmed. The spokesman stated that the Covid positive patients had been relocated to prevent the spread of the virus and that all necessary public health protocols had been followed.

Longford-Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty expressed disappointment over the outbreak. “It is a worrying development but I do know Laurel Lodge has led the way in effectively managing the virus and while it is disappointing for the facility, I have no doubt that all necessary measures are being put in place,” he said.

The details of the nursing home outbreak came after the government explained how the country will deal with 2,500 to 3,000 COVID-19 cases by mid-September.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) had written to the government, expressing concern that the virus’s spread could result in 500 to 700 patients being hospitalised.
