Rising Concerns Over Racial Attacks on Indian Students

Cork: Cork has recently seen a troubling increase in racial attacks against Indian students. Gardaí are on heightened alert following multiple reports of physical assaults on students in the past two weeks.

On Saturday, two Indian students from University College Cork (UCC) were attacked in Cork city centre. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. near Carroll’s Gift Shop on St. Patrick Street. The attackers, described as teenagers, attempted to strangle the students with a plastic rope. Fortunately, the students managed to evade serious harm by freeing themselves and fleeing the scene. They were able to photograph the group of assailants.

Dr. Lekha Menon Margassery, President of the UCC Indian Alumni Community, reported that such incidents are becoming increasingly common. She noted that the same group of attackers also targeted another Indian couple on Adelaide Street and North Main Street within the same half-hour. The couple, who were shopping, narrowly escaped when the rope was thrown around the husband’s neck, which he managed to remove.

Dr. Margassery highlighted that this is not an isolated incident. Just three weeks ago, a group of Indian students was surrounded and assaulted by four individuals. She expressed concern over the growing frequency of these attacks, stating that the last six months have seen more incidents than ever before. Dr. Margassery lamented the change in Cork’s reputation, which has historically been known for its warmth and hospitality. Some students are reportedly considering abandoning their studies and returning home due to these safety concerns.

The student community has called for increased attention and action from the Gardaí to address these incidents. The Garda Press Office has confirmed receipt of a report regarding the attack on St. Patrick Street last Saturday afternoon and is investigating the matter.
