Rising Funeral Costs Prompt Calls for Increased Government Support

Dublin: The Irish government spent €9 million last year to assist individuals struggling to cover funeral expenses, a significant increase from the €6.6 million spent in 2022, according to figures from the Department of Social Protection. As funeral costs continue to rise, more people are seeking financial help, highlighting the need for a formal scheme offering assistance through small regular contributions.

With funeral costs in Ireland escalating, there is growing demand for increased government funding and a relaxation of the criteria for receiving aid. Many families face financial challenges when a death occurs unexpectedly, as few set aside funds for funeral expenses in advance.

The High Cost of a Traditional Irish Funeral

A traditional Irish funeral, often seen as a grand affair, can be expensive, with funeral directors reporting costs ranging from €3,500 to €8,500. Coffin prices, in particular, have surged in recent years. In addition to purchasing a coffin, costs associated with death notices and other essentials are unavoidable.

Independent TD Michael Collins, a former funeral director, has criticised the current additional payment scheme as insufficient. He noted that many people seek financial help to cover funeral costs, with some even resorting to loans or selling assets, including land and pets, to afford a funeral. Collins emphasised that cases of individuals selling personal items like beds to fund burials are unacceptable, and he has called for the reintroduction of the death grant and a more compassionate approach to supporting bereaved families.

Stringent Criteria for Financial Assistance

Currently, the government provides both full and partial financial assistance for funeral costs, but strict conditions apply. One of the main requirements is that applicants must meet a specified income threshold, with weekly earnings of no more than €444 for a single person and €544 for a couple without children. The system has been criticised for being harsh and unscientific, and there have been calls for these rules to be relaxed.

Breakdown of Funeral Expenses

Funeral costs in Ireland vary depending on location, the type of service, and personal preferences. Key expenses typically include:

Funeral Director’s Fees: Ranging from €1,500 to €3,000, these fees cover the logistics of the funeral, such as preparing the body, handling paperwork, and organising the service.
Coffins: Prices range from €500 to €5,000, depending on the style and material, with options ranging from eco-friendly coffins to more elaborate caskets.
Cremation: The cost of a grave plot can vary significantly, particularly in urban areas like Dublin, with prices ranging from €1,000 to €12,000. Cremation fees are generally lower, between €500 and €1,200.
Religious Services: Fees for the use of a church or hall and the services of a priest or minister typically range from €200 to €500.
Floral Arrangements: Costs for flowers can range from €50 to €500, depending on the size and type of arrangements chosen.
Death Notices: Placing a death notice in a newspaper or online usually costs between €50 and €500.
Headstones: These are not included in the funeral costs and typically range from €1,000 to €4,000.
Catering and Transportation (Optional): Post-funeral receptions can add between €500 and €2,000 in catering costs, and transportation costs for mourners can range from €200 to €500.

Total Funeral Costs

Funeral companies estimate that the overall cost of a traditional funeral in Ireland typically ranges from €4,000 to €10,000, depending on various factors.

Government and Private Support

In addition to government assistance, some organisations, including credit unions and trade unions, offer limited bereavement benefits to the families of deceased members. Companies like An Post also offer funeral insurance products aimed at easing the financial burden of funerals. However, with the growing number of families in need of financial support, there are increasing calls for the government to raise the level of assistance and ensure more compassionate support for grieving families.
