Dublin: The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has announced increased charges for various services, including driving license fees and the National Car Test (NCT), effective from January 1, 2025.
Under the revised structure, the cost of a driving license will rise by €10 to €65, while the fee for a learner’s permit will increase from €35 to €45. The full NCT test fee will also go up by €5, moving from €55 to €60. Additionally, the cost of an NCT re-test will see a significant hike, increasing from €28 to €40. Charges for commercial vehicle roadworthiness testing will rise by 15%.
The RSA has justified these increases as part of the government’s €18 million funding plan for the transport sector. According to the RSA, this is the first adjustment in fees since 2012.
However, the Irish Roadhouse Association has strongly criticised the move, calling on the government to immediately reverse what they have labelled as an “unjustified rate hike.” The association argued that imposing these increases was unfair, especially in light of ongoing government proposals to abolish the RSA and reform its operations.
The association further claimed that several government agencies had reviewed the RSA’s inefficiencies and recommended its dissolution. The government has reportedly agreed to this proposal in principle. Allowing a fee increase under such circumstances, the organisation stated, was “inappropriate and unfair,” describing it as a burdensome “Christmas gift” for customers.
