Dublin: Motorists will face increased fees across several Road Safety Authority (RSA) services starting January 1, 2025, marking the first price adjustments since 2012. The changes include a 9% rise in the National Car Test (NCT) fee, increasing from €55 to €60, and a 43% hike in NCT retest fees, from €28 to €40. Driving license fees will also increase by €10.
The RSA defended the increases, citing the need to fund its €18 million expenditure on public interest initiatives and government priorities. It emphasised that the current funding model is unsustainable without fee adjustments, despite criticism from Finance Minister Jack Chambers, who previously argued that the RSA’s reserves made the hikes unnecessary.
The RSA acknowledged delays in key projects, including reviews of multiple learner permits and the driving test curriculum, due to resource constraints. Meanwhile, AA Ireland highlighted concerns about the timing of the increases, calling for greater transparency on how the additional revenue will be used and suggesting a more gradual approach to fee adjustments.
