A Munster Rugby player has tested positive for Covid-19. The PCR testing was carried out on Monday.
He hasn’t shown any symptoms. A retest will be done tomorrow to remove any doubt of false positive.
Six other players who are identified by Munster Rugby as close contacts are currently in self-isolation. One player in Munster and 8 players in Ulster academies have been tested positive before, but this is the first positive test from a senior player with an Irish province.
Munster say their approach of identifying possible close contacts “is in line with the caution we have taken to this issue” and “these players may not be deemed close contacts by the HSE”.
The squad and academy will postpone the training at HPC. The HSE have been notified for contact tracing purposes.
Further PCR testing will take place tomorrow with a return to scheduled training planned for Thursday ahead of Saturday’s Guinness Pro14 encounter against Edinburgh at Thomond Park. Munster Rugby Head of Medical, Dr Jamie Kearns, said that another round of PCR test will be completed tomorrow so that the training can be resumed on Thursday.
He assured that the safety and wellbeing of its players and the staff is their utmost priority and they will continue to work closely with both the IRFU and HSE in this regard.
