Yasser Al-Shahrani of Saudi Arabia will have surgery in the capital Riyadh after suffering a severe head injury during his country’s historic 2-1 World Cup win over Argentina.
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation announced in a statement on Tuesday that Al-Shahrani was hit in the head, chest, and abdomen.
It was also said that he had undergone all essential medical checks but would be kept under observation. It also confirmed his condition is stable.
On Wednesday morning, AlShahrani departed Qatar for Riyadh to have surgery at the National Guard Hospital.
The 30-year-old was originally transferred to Hamad Medical City in Doha, where he got a thorough medical examination and stayed the night.
During second-half stoppage time at the Lusail Stadium, AlShahrani collided with Saudi goalie Mohammed AlOwais’ knee. AlOwais was spotted on the ground in shock after the event.
Al-Shahrani attempted to rise to his feet but appeared bewildered as blood flowed from his nose. After a considerable delay, he was stretchered away.
The 30-year-old Al-Hilal player had performed a remarkable performance, primarily preventing Argentina’s star-studded squad from creating any genuine opportunities in the second half.
