Serious differences exist between the EU and the UK as efforts are made to continue the post-Brexit trade deal

DUBLIN: EU’s chief negotiator, Michael Barnier said there are serious gap between the EU and the UK as efforts were made to continue trading after Brexit.

Barnier said that despite the European Union’s efforts to find solutions, there were still serious differences in level playing fields, governance and fisheries. He added that these are essential conditions for any financial partnership.

Meanwhile, David Frost, the UK’s chief negotiator, said progress had been made after two weeks of intense negotiations. However, he added that there were differences on some important issues.

Mr. Frost assured that they would continue to work towards finding solutions that fully respect UK sovereignty.

Mr. Barnier had briefed MEPs and EU diplomats on the status of the ongoing talks with the UK’s chief negotiator.

The post-Brexit transition period will expire by the end of this year. With that, the UK will exit the single market and customs union. Therefore the EU believes a deal needs to be done by the middle of November.

Although no progress has been made so far, it is understood the two sides will continue to be in touch via video conference calls.

However, the EU’s chief negotiator said the European Union is ready for all circumstances if an agreement is not possible.
