Settlement Scheme: More than 62,500 EU citizens apply for settlement in Northern Ireland

A settlement scheme was designed for the EU citizens who have entered the UK under the EU’s freedom of movement principle, to remain in the UK.

There are now more than 62,500 people registered to live in Northern Ireland. The scheme would allow them to stay in the UK once the Brexit transition ends.

Over 16,800 Polish people have so far registered to shift to Northern Ireland while from Lithuanian at 8,700 and Romanian at 6,310 nationals.

So far, 16,890 applications have been submitted from the Polish community to migrate to Northern Ireland, which is the highest. The next highest were 8,700 from Lithuanian and 6,310 from Romanian.

Around 65% applications have been granted settle status and 33% granted pre-settled status.

Settled status is given to individuals who can prove that they have lived in the UK for five years or more continuously. And those living in UK for a shorter time period can apply for pre-settled status.

The last date for applying is June 2021.
