Dublin: An opinion poll indicates a significant surge in support for Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, following the announcement of a housing plan offering homes for €300,000. The poll suggests that Mary Lou’s popularity has reached a point where she could potentially secure the prime ministership with a majority.
McDonald’s strengthened stance on immigration and empathetic statements addressing homelessness contributed to her popularity, particularly during the ongoing immigration crisis. The poll reveals a decline in support for traditional parties, with both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil experiencing drops in popularity.
Criticism arose in response to Leo Varadkar’s remarks, where he argued that lowering house prices might negatively impact existing homeowners. Sinn Féin’s support increased by two points to 30%, showcasing a clear preference for Mary Lou McDonald’s leadership.
The majority of respondents agreed with McDonald’s proposal that the average house price in Dublin should be €300,000. According to an Ireland Thinks/Sunday Independent poll, three in five people desire a reduction in house prices, which currently average €430,000 in Dublin. A significant 69% of respondents wish for prices to fall to the proposed €300,000 threshold.
The survey further revealed that 63% of respondents support a decrease in property prices, even if it leads to a decline in property values. While 44% firmly believe that €300,000 is a reasonable house price, another 44% find it likely.
In terms of political standings, Fine Gael’s support declined by one point to 20%, while Fianna Fáil experienced a two-point drop to 17%. Despite these shifts, Micheál Martin remains the most popular leader at 44%, followed by Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns at 40%, Mary Lou McDonald at 39%, Leo Varadkar at 38%, Ivana Bacik of the Labour Party at 30%, Peadar Tóibín of Aontú at 28%, and Eamon Ryan of the Green Party at 22%.
Notably, 41% of voters expressed a desire for a government without Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, while 40% believe the current administration will persist after general elections. A noteworthy 62% of respondents favour holding general elections this year, while 31% oppose the idea.
