Solar Revolution Takes Off in Ireland with Over 100,000 Roof-Top Micro-Generators

DUBLIN: Ireland has marked a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, with more than 100,000 roof-top solar micro-generators now connected to the country’s ESB network. This achievement, heralded as a “rooftop revolution,” introduces 400 MW of clean energy into the national power system.

Rapid Growth in Solar Connections

The ESB has reported that 20% of these solar panel connections were established in the last six months alone, with applications currently being processed at a rate of 750 per week. ESB Networks Managing Director Nicholas Tarrant highlighted that customers can now receive payments from electricity suppliers for the excess energy they generate and feed back into the network from their solar panels.

Government and Industry Reactions

Climate Minister Eamonn Ryan praised this development, emphasising that it demonstrates the widespread adoption of solar energy across Ireland. “This achievement reflects a true rooftop revolution, showcasing the commitment of people throughout the country to embrace solar energy,” Minister Ryan said.

Conal Bolger, CEO of the Irish Solar Energy Association, attributed this historic success to the increased enthusiasm of the public. He noted that the collective effort and interest of individuals in adopting solar technology have been pivotal in reaching this landmark.
