DUBLIN: The shortage of workers in Ireland’s home care sector is severe.
The demand for people to be recruited into the home care sector from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) is strong among institution owners.
They say they are unable to find enough staff from within Europe and that this is a serious crisis. Although it is currently permitted to hire workers from outside of Europe in hospitals and nursing homes, this benefit is not available to home care providers.
Home and Community Care Ireland, an organisation representing Ireland’s home care sector, has said that it is experiencing a recruitment crisis and has called on the government to allow the hiring of employees from non-EU countries as a matter of urgency.
The group said its members are nearing maximum capacity and are unable to recruit enough staff to meet increased demand.
Home and Community Care spokesman Joseph Musgave said the government should immediately issue a permit to recruit staff from outside Europe, without which it will not be able to move forward.
He said that as the staff shortage worsens, vulnerable people will have to be left without care.
The government’s willingness to accept their demand will offer up numerous opportunities in this sector for Indians as well.
