Dublin: Storm Bram has swept across Ireland with destructive force, plunging tens of thousands of homes and businesses into darkness and causing widespread infrastructure damage. According to ESB Networks, approximately 54,000 customers initially lost electricity as the storm downed hundreds of power poles and lines. As of last night, around 25,000 customers remained without power, with further disruptions expected.
Severe outages were reported across Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Tipperary, Wexford and Wicklow, while strong winds and heavy rain prompted an orange weather alert for all counties. In Donegal, the alert remained in effect until 9pm, followed by a status yellow wind warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo until midnight.
ESB Networks confirmed that the majority of outages were caused by fallen trees damaging the electricity network. Repair crews and contractors were deployed from early morning, working through challenging conditions until 8pm to assess the damage and begin restoration efforts. Work is scheduled to resume this morning.
“We understand the impact these disruptions have on families and businesses,” an ESB spokesperson said. “Our teams are working tirelessly to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. We appreciate our customers’ patience and cooperation during this difficult time.”
ESB advised the public to check the PowerCheck website for updated restoration timelines and to sign up for the Keep Me Updated service for real-time outage notifications. The utility also issued a safety warning, urging people to stay well clear of fallen wires or damaged electrical infrastructure and to report hazards by calling 1800 372 999.
