Suffolk ram sold for a record price of €44,000 in Wicklow

WICKLOW: A seven-month-old Suffolk ram (a British breed of domestic sheep) sold for a record €44,000 in Wicklow. The record-breaking ram came from a farm in Ballybofey, Co Donegal.

Farmer Richard Thompson described it as a “dream come true” moment when he realised that his ram had sold for the highest ever price for a male sheep at an Irish auction.

The previous highest price paid for a ram at a sale in Republic was €38,000.

Mr Thompson, who began farming Suffolk sheep in 2015, knew his ram was special but had no idea it would sell for such a high price.

Things like this, he said, are something we always dream for but will only happen “once in a lifetime”.

“He was what everyone was looking for, what everyone tries to breed. He had a different bloodline, you’re not breeding into the same line,” Mr Thompson responded to the question of what makes the ram so unique.

The record amount was paid by a consortium led by Dennis Taylor, a farmer from Coleraine, Co Derry. Mr Thompson said the money will be reinvested entirely in the farm.
