Surge in Reports of Sexual Harassment in Schools as Historical Abuse Investigations Unfold..

Dublin: The number of individuals coming forward to report sexual harassment in schools across Ireland continues to grow daily as Gardaí launch investigations into historical incidents of abuse. A Garda spokesperson confirmed that over 160 complaints have been lodged since Wednesday, following the introduction of a dedicated reporting system for those wishing to disclose past sexual abuse in educational institutions.

As part of the scoping investigation, Gardaí have initiated direct contact with each individual who has made a complaint. The majority of these incidents occurred before 2005, with many of the allegations involving abuse at Catholic-run boarding schools and hostels. Although these institutions accounted for 98 percent of the country’s boarding facilities, the extent of the abuse is only now fully coming to light.

Thus far, reports of bullying and abuse have surfaced at 308 schools, with over 2,000 cases of molestation previously left unregistered. The scale of the issue has raised concerns about the future of these institutions, with some fearing that widespread compensation claims could lead to school closures or necessitate direct government intervention.

Detective Chief Superintendent Colm Noonan emphasised that Gardaí are committed to supporting victims of sexual assault, not only in boarding schools but also in day schools and other educational institutions. Individuals who wish to report abuse can contact their local Garda station or submit complaints via email to GNPSB_SCMU@garda.ie or by calling the Garda Child Sexual Abuse Reporting Line at 1800 555 222.
