Renowned tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 in San Francisco due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, his family confirmed on Monday. A towering figure in the world of music, Hussain leaves behind a profound legacy that has inspired countless musicians and enthralled audiences worldwide. His wife, Antonia Minnecola; daughters Anisa and Isabella Qureshi; and siblings Taufiq, Fazal, and Khurshid.
Hussain had been hospitalised in San Francisco with heart-related complications prior to his passing. Earlier reports of his death on Sunday were dismissed by his publicist, who had requested prayers for his recovery. In an official statement, his family paid tribute to his contributions as a teacher, mentor, and cultural ambassador, describing his influence as “unparalleled.”
Born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai, Hussain was the son of legendary tabla virtuoso Ustad Allarakha. A child prodigy, he began performing by the age of 12 and went on to collaborate with iconic Indian artists like Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Shivkumar Sharma. He also gained international acclaim through groundbreaking collaborations with global artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, John McLaughlin, and George Harrison, among others. His work bridged cultural and musical boundaries, establishing Indian classical music on the global stage.
Over his illustrious career, Hussain received numerous accolades, including India’s highest civilian honours—the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. Internationally, he was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship by the United States, the SFJazz Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Aga Khan Music Award for his enduring contributions to the arts. He also won multiple Grammy Awards, becoming the first Indian artist to secure three Grammys in a single night in 2024.
