“Taiwan Shaken by Strongest Earthquake in 25 Years”

Tokyo: A powerful earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, shook Taiwan early Wednesday morning, marking the most intense seismic event the country has faced in the last quarter-century. The quake struck just before 8 a.m. local time, causing significant damage, particularly in urban areas where several buildings were reduced to rubble.

While the current death toll stands at four, authorities fear that the number may escalate as rescue and recovery efforts continue. Reports indicate widespread devastation, with many structures engulfed in flames.

In the wake of the earthquake, tsunami warnings have been issued for regions in southern Japan and the Philippines. The United States Geological Survey pinpointed the epicentre approximately 34.8 kilometres south of Hualien City, with the nearest point of impact being 18 kilometres away.

Authorities have cautioned residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant and implement strict safety measures, as tsunami waves reaching up to three metres (10 feet) in height could potentially impact Miyakojima Island and surrounding areas. Vigilance and precautionary measures are urged to minimise the risk of further casualties and damage.
