Taoiseach Leo Varadkar Moves Joe Biden to Tears with Tribute to the Late Son at the White House Shamrock Ceremony in Washington DC

During the annual Shamrock Ceremony at the White House, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar paid tribute to Joe Biden’s late son, Beau Biden, a decorated war hero and former Delaware attorney general who passed away in 2015 from brain cancer. Varadkar quoted Beau Biden’s words about the “sacred promises” leaders make, touching the US president deeply. Biden, visibly moved, wiped away tears during the tribute. The ceremony, a tradition dating back to 1952, symbolises the strong ties between Ireland and the United States. This year, Biden received shamrocks grown in Co. Kerry, presented in a Naomhóg bowl from Dingle Crystal. Notable guests included Biden’s distant cousin, rugby star Dave Kearney, Oscar winners Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, WWE wrestler Becky Lynch, and JFK’s grand-nephew and Special Envoy to Northern Ireland, Joe Kennedy III.
