DUBLIN: Compensation for the dedicated service of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic was also debated in the Dáil.
Taoiseach Micheal Marin said the government is “actively” considering a bonus for healthcare workers as a way to recognise their efforts, but he did not specify whether the bonus will be monetary or in the form of additional leave.
The Taoiseach said that Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath will evaluate all aspects and take appropriate action immediately. Mr. Martin also said that the government is fully committed to recognising the sacrifices made by public sector workers.
Labour Leader Alan Kelly requested the government to grant the frontline heroes a €1,000 pandemic payment to honor their efforts. He pointed out that healthcare staff in Northern Ireland and Scotland who were recognised for their pandemic service received a £500 (€570) payment.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) had called on the government to compensate their members for the increased risk and service they provided during the pandemic. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar had promised in February that a financial reward or additional leave will be granted to healthcare workers for their pandemic service.
