Team Ireland has been lauded for their respectful gesture at the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday.
Ireland was the fourth country to be presented to the world at the Olympic Stadium. Boxing stars Kelly Harrington and Brendan Irvine, proudly led out the team carrying Irish flag.
The Irish team’s respect for the Japanese people was widely praised on social media. When the athletes entered the stadium, they immediately paused to bow to the entertainers in the traditional Japanese style.
The gesture of honouring Japanese tradition has won the hearts of millions watching across the world and has been described as a ‘classy’ gesture by many on social media.
“I like how Ireland payed respect, and follow traditions and from what I’m seeing the only country to bow before walking down the entrance,” one Twitter user posted.
Sanita Puspure got Team Ireland’s Olympic journey off to a terrific start by winning her opening heat. The two-time world champion won the second of six heats in the women’s single sculls rowing on Friday.
However, Ronan Byrne and Philip Doyle, who competed in the men’s doubles sculls, lost their automatic qualification for the semi-finals.
Ireland has sent its largest delegation ever, with a final quota of 116 members.
