Temperatures to Plunge as Arctic Air Brings Snow and Fog Across Ireland

Dublin: The Met Office has issued a warning that temperatures across the country will drop sharply from today as a mass of Arctic air moves over Ireland. The cold front is expected to bring snow, widespread frost and dense fog over the coming nights.

Forecasters predict that temperatures could fall to –3°C in parts of the country between now and the end of the week. With strong winds accompanying the cold spell, the wind chill effect will make conditions feel even colder than the actual temperature. Snowfall is expected, particularly on higher ground, with accumulations of up to 5 centimetres possible.

While conditions may ease slightly by Friday, forecasters say the cold will return over the weekend, accompanied by periods of rain.

How to Dress for the Cold

With temperatures set to plunge, health experts are advising the public to dress appropriately to avoid exposure-related health issues.

The most effective approach is to dress in layers, which helps retain body heat and provides better insulation against the biting Arctic wind.

Recommended clothing includes:

  • Thermal base layers that fit snugly to the body to trap heat
  • Insulating mid-layers such as a fleece or wool sweater
  • A windproof or waterproof outer jacket to block wind, rain and snow

Experts also advise wearing:

  • A beanie or warm hat to prevent heat loss from the head
  • Gloves to protect the hands
  • Warm socks and insulated boots
  • A scarf to shield the face from cold gusts

Those travelling to particularly cold or exposed areas are encouraged to carry portable hand warmers for added safety and comfort.

What to Eat During the Extreme Cold

During periods of severe cold, nutrition plays a key role in keeping the body warm and strengthening the immune system. Experts recommend consuming foods that naturally generate heat, provide sustained energy, and support overall immunity.

Warm, hearty meals such as hot soups and porridge are ideal for maintaining body temperature. Dishes prepared with ingredients like chilli, ginger, and garlic help stimulate circulation and keep the body warm. It is advisable to limit the intake of soft drinks and other cold beverages during this time.

Because the body requires additional energy in winter, foods rich in protein—eggs, fish, legumes, chicken, and dairy products—are particularly beneficial. Nutritious vegetables such as carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, eggplant, and spinach contribute essential vitamins and minerals.

Fruits high in vitamin C, including oranges, lemons, guava, and kiwi, help boost immunity and protect against cold-related illnesses.

Warm drinks such as ginger tea, cinnamon tea, honey-lemon tea, and clear broth can soothe the throat and provide comfort in cold weather. Additionally, stews, porridge, and oatmeal support digestion, provide warmth, and help maintain energy levels throughout the day.
