Tenants cannot be evicted due to rent arrears during COVID-19 crisis

DUBLIN: Tenants cannot be evicted in the name of rent arrears during the COVID-19 crisis. The government has provided legal protection for distressed tenants for another three months. The Cabinet approved the decision in this regard.

The Cabinet agreed to extend the Residential Tenancies and Valuation Bill, which was set to expire on 12 April, for another three months. The law thus protects tenants from eviction until July.

The bill also prevents any rise in rent for those who make self-declarations that their income has decreased as a result of the Pandemic. However, the ban on all evictions will expire within ten days of the end of the 5km limit. This limit is set to last until April 5, but is expected to be reviewed in the coming days.

The cabinet also decided to make this year’s St. Patrick’s Day an online event. Each Irish embassy will host a virtual celebration with key contacts.

Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin said the eviction ban should be maintained until the end of this year.

Meanwhile, People Before Profit Gino Kenny said it was vital that people with both rental and mortgage arrears should be protected even when the pandemic is over.
