Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), expressed gratitude to Ireland for its “moral leadership” regarding the Israeli bombardment of Gaza. The acknowledgment came during Dr. Tedros’ visit to Dublin ahead of a pandemic convention. Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar shared concerns with Dr. Tedros about the critical situation in Gaza, emphasising the potential humanitarian impact. Both leaders stressed the need for diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire, echoing recent calls from the UK and Germany. Dr. Tedros emphasised that a ceasefire is crucial for protecting the health of the people in Gaza, highlighting the interconnectedness of peace and public health. Taoiseach Varadkar underscored the urgent need for normal healthcare access in the region, expressing fears of disease outbreaks due to limited supplies and sanitation challenges. He hopes for swift diplomatic actions to address the situation, avoiding a delay until the next EU summit in the New Year.
