The Irish government is reportedly set to pursue negotiations for an extradition treaty with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite concerns voiced by human rights advocates. This initiative follows the footsteps of Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands, which have already established such agreements with the Gulf state. The motivation behind this move is the presence of individuals associated with the Kinahan cartel believed to be residing in the UAE.
While some voices, including human rights lawyer Radha Stirling of the Detained in Dubai campaign group, have expressed apprehensions, Justice Minister Helen McEntee emphasised the success of An Garda Síochána in building international law enforcement coalitions. McEntee stated during a Newstalk interview that the proposed discussions with the UAE would cover not only an extradition treaty but also mutual legal assistance. She underscored that such agreements would prevent individuals from evading the law in other jurisdictions.
The Cabinet was expected to address this matter in their discussions, and an official announcement is anticipated to follow.
